Countries that require a visa in advance for Indian passport holders

For ordinary Indian passports, tourism travel only.

These are the trips that need planning rather than just booking. A visa must be granted before you travel — through an embassy, a consulate, an authorised application centre, or an official online system — and until it is issued, any flight you have booked is a bet.

The single most useful habit for this category is to apply early and to book refundable or flexible tickets until the visa is in hand. Processing times move with demand, and peak season is exactly when you want to travel and when everyone else is applying.

It is also worth checking the country page before assuming the answer is a flat no: some destinations waive or simplify the requirement for people who already hold a valid visa or residence permit from certain other countries, and where that applies we record the conditions verbatim.

We have verified 25 countries so far, of which 6 are on this page. More are being added as each one is checked against its government’s own sources — this is not yet a complete list of every country in the world.

What this means in practice

A visa must be obtained before you travel and cannot be arranged at the border. Requirements, fees and processing times are set by the destination, and applications can be refused.

Every country page shows the official source we read and the date we read it. Rules change without notice, so check the source before you book.
