Where to travel in January on an Indian passport

For ordinary Indian passports, tourism travel only.

January is the month people book with the most confidence and the least flexibility. The dates are fixed by everyone else’s calendar — the new year, the long weekend, the tail of the winter break — which means you are choosing between destinations rather than between dates, and paying whatever the fare happens to be.

That makes the visa question worth settling before the flight question. A January trip is usually booked weeks rather than months ahead, and an eVisa that takes ten working days is a different proposition in January than it is in September. Each card below carries the rule for an Indian passport, so you can see which of these you could still leave for at short notice.

The ranking is climate only. Where two destinations rate the same, the difference that matters is usually cost — the daily budget on each card is a rough answer, and the country page has the detail behind it.

Of the 25 countries we have verified so far, 17 rate January good or excellent. More are being added as each one is checked against its government’s own sources — this is not yet every country in the world, and a destination missing from this page has usually not been researched yet rather than been ruled out.

Best in January

Peak season in January: Bahrain, Cambodia, Laos, Maldives, Mauritius, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, UAE and Vietnam. Expect higher prices and more people, and book earlier than you otherwise would — this is about crowds and cost, not weather.

Verified, but January is not their season

These are countries we have checked and published, whose measured weather does not support a January trip. They are here because a destination missing from a page tells you nothing about why — each card carries its own rating for January, and each country page shows the months that do work.

Daily budgets are our own mid-range estimates for one traveller, reviewed between 15 August 2026 and 18 August 2026. They are a guide, not a price anyone charges.

How these are ranked

A month is rated from published temperature and rainfall measurements for real weather stations, not from a general impression of the country.

Ranking is weather only. It says nothing about how easy a country is to enter or what it costs — both are on every card, and the visa rule on each one was read from that government’s own source, with the date shown on the country page.
